English: Descending from the Quiraing The Spectacular escarpment of the Quiraing has been formed by landslipping on a massive scale. Plateau basalts of the Tertiary igneous complex have fractured, with huge blocks slipping down towards the sea. One such block lies directly ahead of the walkers in this view and another more distantly to the left. The footpath follows a trough behind some of the blocks, and the lochans left of the photo are impounded in similar depressions behind yet more slipped blocks of the landscape, out of view to the left. The main escarpment, from which the blocks have slipped, forms an impressive ridge over several kilometres in the north of Skye, facing east with views across the Inner Sound to Raasay, Rona and Applecross. |
